Nils Landgren received honorary award at the Swedish GRAMMYS

During the award ceremony of the Swedish GRAMMYS on February 20 at the Stockholm “Circus” Nils Landgren has received the lifetime achievement award. The “Grammis” is the most important Swedish multi-genre music award, selected by music journalists and members of the music industry. Nils Landgren received the award from Viktoria Tolstoy and, instead of a speech, played a sweeping solo performance.
“Teamwork” (ACT 9552-2) the new album by the Nils Landgren Funk Unit with guests like Al Jarreau, Till Brönner and Joe Sample will be released in May.

Vijay Iyer and Rudresh Mahanthappa win the 2012 "Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Award"

Vijay Iyer and Rudresh Mahanthappa have won the prestigious American "Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Award". The awards were presented by the Jazz Journalists Association at the 16th annual JJA Jazz Awards Awards gala on June 20, 2012 at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City.

Vijay Iyer, who already won the award as musician of the year in 2010, was voted pianist of the year, prevailing against the other nominees Keith Jarrett, Matthew Shipp and Craig Taborn. Rudresh Mahanthappa was awarded alto-saxophonist of the year, surpassing Lee Konitz, Phil Woods and Miguel Zenon. It is Rudresh Mahanthappa’s fourth award in a row in this category, which he already won 2009, 2010 and 2011.

The Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Award is one of the most important international jazz awards. The winners are determined by an independent jury of renowned jazz journalists.

The 60th Annual DownBeat Critics Poll

Pianist Vijay Iyer won in an unprecedented five categories of the 60th Annual DownBeat International Critics Poll, taking honours for Jazz Artist of the Year and top Jazz Album, for his trio’s 2012 disc, Accelerando (ACT). Iyer also was voted the top Pianist, his trio was named the top Jazz Group, and he took honours for Rising Star Composer.

“This is one of our most exciting polls in years—not just because of its historic nature, but also because of some incredible, record-breaking artistic recognition,” said DownBeat Publisher Frank Alkyer.
“For our 2012 poll, 186 critics from around the globe voted, making this the largest voting turnout in the poll’s illustrious history,” Alkyer said. “The DownBeat Critics Poll is the most comprehensive poll in the jazz world. Its results show more than 1,000 artists or acts receiving votes in 62 categories, shining a spotlight on every style and every instrument in jazz.”

The Critics Poll is divided into categories for established acts and for Rising Stars. In addition to Jazz categories, the poll also includes Blues and Beyond categories. The complete results will be published in the August issue of DownBeat, arriving on newsstands on July 17.
